01 — The Order

A hundred and forty million years of patience.

The mantis has practiced a single discipline since the Cretaceous: absolute stillness, then absolute speed. It is the only insect that can turn its head to meet your gaze — and hold it. Nothing in the undergrowth watches back the way she does.

02 — Anatomy

Built like a cathedral. Armed like a trap.

Compound eyes
Ten thousand lenses per eye, and the only true stereo vision in the insect world. She does not estimate distance. She knows it.
Raptorial forelegs
Folded in prayer, spined like saw blades. The strike is faster than the eye that reads this sentence.
The turning head
A triangular head on a free neck — unique among insects. It is the reason she follows your cursor. And you.

03 — Species

From orchid mimics to dead-leaf ghosts — one order, twenty-four hundred disguises.

“Prophet” — from the Greek mantis. The ancients believed she pointed lost travelers home.

Follow her gaze. Chapter 02 — Coleoptera — is coming.
